The Climatic Specifics of the French Riviera
Pool maintenance on the French Riviera is more demanding than in most other French regions. Three factors accelerate water deterioration: heat (30°C to 35°C in July and August speeds up algae growth and chlorine consumption), wind (the mistral and sirocco load the water with dust and pollen), and strong sunlight (UV destroys free chlorine more quickly than anywhere else in France).
The result: what requires weekly treatment in cooler regions often needs two passes per week during peak season on the Riviera. Here is how to organise maintenance efficiently.
Weekly Tasks (Throughout the Season)
Each week during the swimming season (April to October on the French Riviera), the basic maintenance cycle covers the following.
Measuring water parameters: pH (target: 7.2 to 7.4), free chlorine (1 to 1.5 mg/L), total alkalinity (80 to 120 mg/L), calcium hardness (200 to 300 mg/L). These four parameters are measured with an electronic tester (50 to 150 EUR) or test strips (less precise). On the French Riviera, pH rises quickly due to naturally hard water: adjust it before any treatment, otherwise chlorine loses 50% of its effectiveness.
Adding treatment products as needed: pH reducer or increaser, chlorine tablets or liquid, preventive algicide if water is very exposed to sun. Brushing pool walls: 15 minutes for a standard 8x4 m pool. Running the robot or manual vacuuming of the floor. Cleaning skimmer and filter baskets. Backwashing the filter if pressure exceeds the normal threshold.
The Full Seasonal Calendar
**Opening the pool (March-April)**: remove winter cover, clean and inspect liner or tiles, restart filtration system, replace water if it has deteriorated too much (cost: 30 to 80 EUR for water depending on volume), shock-chlorinate to disinfect, calibrate all parameters, check equipment (pump, filter, salt electrolyser if present, lighting).
**Peak season (June-August)**: two passes per week, filtration run for a minimum of 12 hours per day (practical rule: water temperature divided by 2 equals hours of daily filtration, so 28°C means 14 hours). Weekly shock treatment if the pool is heavily used. Monthly anti-limescale dosing to protect equipment.
**End of season (September-October)**: back to weekly visits, gradual reduction in filtration time, full clean of the sand filter (or replacement if over 5 years old).
**Winterising (November-March)**: active or passive winterising depending on preference. On the French Riviera, active winterising (pool maintained at low treatment levels but not drained) is recommended as nights often remain mild. Passive winterising (partial drain, cover, winter treatment) suits owners who are absent all winter.
Common Problems on the French Riviera
**Limescale**: the region's primary problem. Tap water in Antibes, Nice and Cannes is very hard (hardness between 30 and 40°F depending on the area). Without regular anti-limescale treatment, white deposits form on walls, nozzles and equipment. Preventive treatment: liquid anti-limescale (1 L per 50 m³, every two weeks in season). Curative treatment: diluted hydrochloric acid or specialist descaler, manual brushing. Cost of a full anti-limescale restoration: 200 to 400 EUR.
**Green algae**: develops in 24 to 48 hours when pH is too high or chlorine too low, in July and August. Curative treatment: 10x shock treatment (high-dose chlorine), full brushing, robot pass, continuous filtration for 48 hours. If black algae (Cladophora) are present, a more aggressive treatment with a specialist algicide is required. Cost of restoring a green pool: 100 to 250 EUR in labour plus chemicals.
**Cloudy water**: caused by pH imbalance, clogged filter or lack of treatment. Solution: liquid flocculant, filter cleaning, parameter rebalancing. Results in 24 to 48 hours.
Pro vs DIY: The Real Question
A hands-on owner can manage routine pool maintenance themselves. The annual cost of chemicals runs between 400 and 800 EUR for a 50 to 80 m³ pool on the French Riviera (higher than elsewhere due to strong sunlight and heavy use). Time investment: 1 to 2 hours per week during peak season.
Hiring a professional costs between 60 and 120 EUR per visit depending on pool size and location. For weekly maintenance from May to September (22 weeks), budget 1,300 to 2,600 EUR per season, usually including chemicals. An all-inclusive annual contract (opening, maintenance, winterising) negotiates between 1,500 and 3,500 EUR depending on pool size.
A professional brings precise product knowledge, professional equipment (powerful pool robot, electronic analyser) and above all responsiveness: if a problem is spotted during their visit, it is treated immediately. For non-resident owners managing a holiday rental property, using a professional is almost mandatory: guests will not tolerate poor water quality.
